A Hand Along the Way – Volunteering in the Bisexual Community

volunteer-1The bisexual community thrives because of its volunteers. Some are highly visible – those who run events like last weekend’s highly successful EuroBiCon and the heads of organisations like BCNBiUK and the Bisexual Index, others work behind the scenes, doing accounts, designing posters and collecting tea money.  Biscuit fave Cat returns to tell us what the draw is, and how you can get involved.

I’ve done quite a bit of volunteering work in the UK bi community over the years. I work full time and have children and, as a result, have limited free time – so why do I want to spend it doing more work when I could be relaxing?

Putting something back

I’ve been involved with the UK bi community for 10 years now, since I attended my first BiCon in 2003. Although I had other friends who were… Continue reading

We Need To Talk About Intimate Partner Abuse in the Bisexual Community

downloadIn 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the results of a survey into domestic- and intimate partner violence (IPV) in the USA. It found that 38% of bisexual men and 75% of bisexual women and had experienced physical or sexual or mental abuse from a partner. In the UK, Stonewall research has also found 75% of lesbian and bisexual women have experienced domestic abuse. Two thirds of the perpetrators were female.

We asked four bisexual survivors of domestic- and intimate partner violence to tell us their stories, and this is what we learned. [Contains frank descriptions of abuse in survivors’ own words]

We don’t have a frame of reference for our experiences

Stereotypes abound when it comes to partner violence. We believe men are abusers and women are abused and we believe same-sex relationships are by their nature free from violence. We believe abuse must… Continue reading

Being Bi – Borderline Personality Disorder

118HUsually when we talk about sexual behaviour as a symptom, it’s metaphorical, but when you’re bi and living with Borderline Personality Disorder your sexuality really is seen as a symptom, representing emotional and social instability, promiscuity and volatility.  Friend of Biscuit Cat shares her experience navigating the way.

“I’m bisexual and I have a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), a serious mental illness marked by unstable moods, behaviour, and relationships that has been in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders since 1980.

Mental health issues are prevalent in the bi community, with a higher than average number of bisexuals having suffered from mental health problems at some point when compared to the general population. Bisexual women in particular are more likely to suffer (in a Biscuit poll earlier this year only 12% of respondents said they had never suffered from… Continue reading

Bi Online: Finding Your Community Without Leaving the House

laptop typingLet’s face it, if you’re bi it can be pretty tough going living in a world where heterosexuality is the norm. Most of the time your sexuality is completely erased and you’re assumed to be gay or straight depending on the gender of your current partner. When you’re not being erased you find yourself being othered for not fitting neatly into one of the gay or straight boxes. Having a space where bisexuality is the norm is important to give one a feeling of validity and belonging.

But what if there are no bi majority spaces that you can access? In the UK the main event in the bisexual calendar is BiCon, but this only happens once a year (and, as it happens, I can’t make it this year). There are BiFests happening throughout the year and regular bisexual meet up groups, but all of these are… Continue reading

1. Alan Cumming – Not My Father’s Son: A Family Memoir (Canongate)

acSample quote: “It’s hard to explain how much that feeling of the bottom potentially falling out at any moment takes its toll. It makes you anxious, of course, and constant anxiety is impossible for the body to handle. So you develop a coping mechanism, and for us that meant shutting down. Everything we liked or wanted or felt joy in had to be hidden or suppressed. I’m sad to say that this method works. If you don’t give as much credence or value to whatever it is that you love, it hurts less when it is… Continue reading

Four Bisexual Movies from the Golden Age of Cinema

Sex in Chains still
The Golden Age of black and white cinema doesn’t seem like the likeliest of places to find a film with overt bisexual themes, but there are a handful of examples that are required viewing for any wannabe queer movie buff. Don’t expect anything original here; each of these films follows the same basic plot, the classic bi love triangle in which an existing relationship is threatened by bisexual urges. Just like in modern bi films like Basic Instinct (1992), Pretty Persuasion (2005) and Y Tu Mamá También (2001) bisexuals here are depraved Casanovas or tortured souls, destroying lives. Here’s  where those cinematic tropes began.

 Michael / 1924

Adapted from a 1902 novel, it’s rumoured that the married director Carl Theodore Dreyer’s drew on experience of his own same-sex affairs when making Michael, the story of an acclaimed artist known as The Master who struggles with his relationship… Continue reading
