Stonewall Hosts First Ever Bisexual Role Models Training Day

2016-07-17 15.25.35A group of 39 bisexual people from a wide range of backgrounds met in London yesterday for the first ever Stonewall Role Models training day specifically for the bisexual community.

Following the success of Stonewall’s LGBT Role Model’s Programme, the charity yesterday presented it’s first role model training day aimed specifically at empowering bisexual people to be role models to their communities.

The day began with a brief address from Stonewall Chief Executive Ruth Hunt (who then left in order to maintain the integrity of a bisexual-only space), before attendees were given the chance to reflect on what the words ‘role model’ meant to them and workshop ideas on how to create more inclusive environments and increase visibility of bisexual people in the workplace and in wider society through personal empowerment.  Hints and tips on how to feel confident as a role model, as well as ways to harness the power of bisexual networks were discussed, and the day was deemed an overwhelming success.

Abigail Kay, who works in the interfaith sector, told Biscuit “I’m lucky enough to have quite a few bi friends, and to have mostly supportive people around me, but yesterday showed what else there is out there in the bi community. I’d never really felt a need for a specific bi community before, because I wanted to carve out my own space in the LGBT+ world, but now I can see how much more there is available, and I’m excited to get more involved.”

You can find out more about becoming a Stonewall Bi Role Model, and sign up for the next training day to be held in September by visiting the Stonewall website.

Libby is a 30-something Londoner, who spends more time reading picture books than is seemly. She became a bi activist entirely by accident, but now she can't imagine living any other way. In the event of an emergency, she'll have a large gin and tonic, thanks.

The integrity of a bisexual only space.
Really? Try swapping bisexual with male or white. Does it sound okay? The only meeting that I am happy with is all inclusive. We all need to respect each others traditions and preferences of couse but to do that we all need to learn from each other. I will not be attending a bisexual only meeting. Only supporting those which include my lesbian wife, my small son, my heterosexual best friend and seek to inform and include everyone around them.

You might not want to come to a bi only space. So don’t come. Other pepole want some restrictions. They are welcome to take advantage of them. Getting upset because other people make use of something you don’t even want is pathetic.
