… and so famously “bisexual” star Lady Gaga revealed to her Instagram followers that she now considers herself “straight”.
Posted from Atlanta Pride last weekend, this seeming about-turn has caused much semantic debate, with some suggesting that she is simply clumsily referring to herself as “straight” because she is discussing herself in the context of her current relationship.

Gaga has made several overt statements concerning her bisexuality in the past, including telling a Q & A audience at the Berghain Club in Berlin:

“It’s not a lie that I am bisexual and I like women, and anyone that wants to twist this into ‘She says she’s bisexual for marketing’, this is a fucking lie. This is who I am and who I have always been.”

She also claims her song “Poker Face” is about sleeping with a man when she really wants to be sleeping with a woman.

Charlotte 'Lottie' Dingle is Biscuit's founding editor. When she's not running freelancing for a diverse bunch of clients ranging from Cosmo to Occupy, she enjoys teaching life drawing, discussing life/the universe/everything with her beloved (but smelly) 22-year-old cat, writing flash fiction for her MA course, getting pretentious tattoos, listening to folk music, creating surrealist art, trying to change the world and drinking red wine. Oh, and My Little Pony. Don't forget My Little Pony. Her favourite biscuits are cream crackers (do they count as biscuits?).

I haven’t heard further news about this, but my initial reaction was the inclination to agree with those who suggested it was a generalisation on the singer’s part. It could be (as implied) that she was referring to herself and her partner, and any others they were with, as straight out of “clumsy” laziness with no thought to how her LGBTO fans might react. Then again, maybe she hasn’t felt anything for a member of the same sex in a while and this was her way of announcing the new label for herself. Alternatively (I don’t know anything about him), perhaps her boyfriend prefers her to call herself straight – one would hope she wouldn’t just to please him, but I have seen it happen before.

Whatever the case, her choice of words is a little disappointing – I’m surprised she appears to have given no thought to how some of her followers might feel after believing they had her as an out role model – but hopefully she’ll explain all in a more sensitive manner soon (if she hasn’t already).
